What awaits us

Mount Olympus needs little introduction. For thousands of years, stories of gods, legends and people have met here, between the Aegean Sea and the highest ridges in Greece.

For us, though, the story is best lived on foot. We set off from Prionia, pass the Agapitos Refuge and carry on to Mytikas, at 2,918 metres. It will be a long day, with almost 1,900 metres of elevation gain and 14-15 hours on the mountain. The kind of day where you leave by headtorch in the morning and come back in the evening with a story no guidebook can give you.

But Olympus is not only about the summit. We come down through the places and the stories at the foot of the mountain, reach the Enipeas Canyon and ancient Dion, trade our boots for the Aegean Sea, and keep a little energy for the waters of the Kresna Gorge on the way home.

We continue to the Dion Archaeological Park, the ancient sacred city of the Macedonians at the foot of Olympus, then stop for lunch nearby.
